Ours and our grandchildren and nieces, nephews and greats all have to the experience of doing that since we take our 6 qt. hand cranked White Mountain freezer to various family gathering every year. The old gunny sack and an old piece of quilt go on top and they fight to crank and sit on it. Makes much better ice cream than the electric freezers and is usually done before the electric ones.
You forgot eating the freshly 'cranked' ice cream. I only got to eat it at functions where someone had the old fashioned kind. Never as a kid.
@TheSunnyC - I agree-that was the best ice cream ever !!
@BLB - I had just forgot the fun we had -maybe just because it was being together as a family--but it was a good memory
Hey sunshine, I hope you're day is full of happiness and smiles... love you lots ! *~matthew~*
@bleuzeus - Thank you Matthew--you always make me smile,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Love you lots tooooooooo
Everyone needs a friend like U
You can still get crank machines but they are much more expensive than the fiberglass electric. The closest experience we have now is when we have the kids bring a small and a large coffee can. Fill the small one with ice cream mix that you have made...seal it good with duct tape...then put the small can in the larger can and pack with ice and salt. Again duct tape the top on and have races kicking the can to the finish line of a race. About two races each kid unwraps his own cream. Kids love it, it is fun. And of course generally the adults get in on it too.
@mommachatter - Wow sounds like a fun filled day and I would sure need the ice cream after all of that !
Don't remember either one. We didn't have an icecream maker........just went to the store for that. Hey, I'm still a young thing (will be 67 in April). Do remember having to pop corn with the popper on the burner and turning a little crank on top. Does that qualify me for ''remember back when?'' lol
@thistlepatch - well I don't remember that one but I think any old memory that makes you smile is a good one !!

I remember those days. My parents would add fresh strawberries or peaches and it tasted so good. I loved to sit on top while my dad was cranking.
Don't remember sitting on top, but sure did crank it. (o;
@Karens_Potpourri - Oh my Mom added Bananas to one batch-then we poured chocolate syrup on the other !
@GrannyHummingbird - Well they gave you the hardest job !!
