  • 2 things I have had on my mind today.A friend of ours called yesterday. His brother in law died--not counting the sprays of flowers at the funeral-they had 70 pot plants ! No one wanted them or had the time to care or them--he took the ones that were left-between 30-40--He asked me to take some--he has no room left in his house. I told him to take some to the nursing homes and what he had left that he couldnt keep I would take--I ended up with 4-I took a couple to my Mother in laws house. What a waste for flowers and money. Thats why I always tell people to donate money to some charityin the persons honor. Something to think about next time the need comes up.

The other thing--can anyone tell me what the difference in laundry soap and dishwashing soap is(besides the price of course) I can buy a gallon of dishwashing soap for about 3-4 dollars and a small bottle of laundry soap is about 7-10 dollars. I buy dishwashing soap and mix it with laundry soap--heck when I'm out of laundry soap I just use dishwashing soap in the washer--soap's soap--right???

  • Weeeellllll! I'd have to do some research on that but if you are doing it and not ruining your clothes washer I guess it is working. Dishwasher detg has lots of strong cleaner like clorox type stuff in it so guess it would fade things Dishwashing detg. makes lots of suds so not sure how the washing machine deals with that. Would think washing machine soap has brighteners etc. in it but I haven't a clue. If it works for you keep doing it. Sure sounds less expensive. You don't know a thing more than when I started this non knowledgeable reply.

  • Oh, btw I totally agree with you on the flower thing.

  • Love SunnyC's reply about the soap. Do they list ingredients on the box or bottle? I was once told dish soap was milder.

I agree with the flowers but I can tell you there is nothing more empty than a funeral without any. At son's the amount was just right though one plant was to big for my house so I gave it to my neighbor. (she kept it in too dark a place so now they are trying to save it).

  • I no longer buy flowers, unless it's a very close relative.  I've begun writing a check with the little "for" line saying, "Please apply to any memorial expenses."   I figure if they have kids or grandkids coming from away, they need gas money, or flight money, or little ones might need some dressier clothes for the occasion....OR, the immediate family just might need the money to apply to the funeral or tombstone expenses.  Those of us that have had to pay for a funeral in the past several years, know that the fees are out of sight.    I have occasionally gotten a thank you note from an organization they've donated it to, and if that was their wishes, that's fine with me.  But I've decided charity needs to start at home.   Just in the past few months, in this area, there have been instances of notations on the obituary, saying, in lieu (sp) of flowers, please donate to the family of the deceased.   I think that makes a whole lot more sense.

  • @GrannyHummingbird - I agree with you Granny--I wanted to donate to the family a few times but wasnt sure how to do it tackfully--now I know !!

  • Baby-girl, what a wonderful idea, and reason to consider sending a donation.
Very well thought out. I think it's wonderful for you to have suggested the nursing homes
for the plants,, just like you to be thinking about others. One of the reasons I love you so much.
I hope you've had a wonderful holiday. My day was spent visiting some family and then I had
a friend over to watch some movies,,, we even cuddled on the couch together a little bit.
It felt nice to have someone next to me who wanted to be there.
I love you Maggie, you deserve so many blessings.... and I hope they all come your way.
